The leading causes for tree health problems

The most common cause of all tree health care issues in an urban environment is root issues. Specifically girdling roots and the tree becoming root bound. These are physiological issues typically created by improper planting and can be promoted by sub standard drip irrigation layout. They are problems that get progressively worse over time and can be difficult to mitigate. There are planting protocols that must be followed to help prevent these issues from establishing. They are found almost exclusively on transplanted trees and are rarely observed on trees grown and established from seed at their permanent planting location.

One of the most critical areas of the tree is called the root flare or root collar. This is the area where the roots transition into the trunk and is identified by a visible taper or flare in the area of transition. This area needs to be exposed to oxygen making a tree planted too deep deprived of the necessary oxygen on the root flare. This deprivation inhibits the trees ability to transport water and nutrients from the roots into the canopy which reduces tree vitality making it more susceptible to disease, pests, stress, drought, etc. When planting a tree it is critical to not have the root flare smothered by soil.

Girdling roots are another issue that affects the tree’s health. These are roots that establish while the tree is in the pot before planting. As these roots get larger they can cause the tree to become root bound and essentially choke the tree. Girdling roots can also be created by insufficient water distribution in drip irrigation systems. Installing a drip system with minimal emitters and isolated areas of saturation in the rootzone can cause the tree to become root bound by establishing roots that twist around the trunk and each other in their mission to reach the isolated pockets of saturation. A root bound tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients from the roots to the canopy is inhibited making it more susceptible to harmful effects of disease, stress, drought, etc. Proper protocols during the planting process must be followed to mitigate the risk of girdling roots and the tree becoming root bound.
